A social element that is misconstrued in the media is character misrepresentation – whereby a non-white character is played by a white actor. You can find many actors and characters playing roles that would represent a specific race or even gender, especially found in Hollywood movies. Plus there are many types of racism such as inferential racism that derives from the concept of making an inference about people, typically marginalized people; thereby asserting a social hierarchy governed by media channels. Even if the media is made for the freedom of speech, sometimes this concept can be abused or taken advantage of to showcase extreme or offensive opinions. Other than that you can find discrimination and gender inequality everywhere, even in the simplest google searches. One can search for professors and simply get only white male educators, this is a simple example on how people who have access to the internet will get to form an idea on how others may be or could be represented, it also might limit one’s goals when seeing such results.
Another example is when the media such as films and tv shows exhibit that Arab people represent purely one religion that is Islam, which is completely false or sometimes as violent peers in our society.
To sum up, media can be oppressive towards all kinds of racism that can be managed and reduced in our future days.
